Cuando alrededor de 1930, J. R. R. Tolkien comenzó a escribir El hobbit, hacía ya diez años que trabajaba en el vasto panorama mitológico de El Libro de los Relatos, que más tarde se llamaría El Silmarillion. Así como esas crónicas tempranas narraban los mitos inmemoriales de la Primera y Segunda Edad, Tolkien pronto advirtió que El hobbit iba ordenándose de algún modo como un relato de la Tercera Edad (Gandalf habla del Nigromante en las primeras páginas), aunque las inesperadas aventuras de un pacífico hombre del campo no parecieran tener mucha relación con las vastas y oscuras mitologías de la Tierra Media. El estilo directo y lineal, con alusiones (que el autor deploró más tarde) a un público infantil, no impide la poderosa irrupción -- unas pocas veces en términos de comedia -- de los grandes temas tolkienianos (el poder, la codicia, la guerra, la muerte) que reaparecerían en una dimensión a menudo obviamente épica en El Señor de los Anillos.

Il y a quelques jours encore, la vie d'Elmir était une vie normale. Le matin, dans le tramway qui l'emmenait au collège, il faisait du troc avec son meilleur ami, Ismène. Ensemble, ils allaient manger les beignets de la vieille Nourrédia. Le soir, il jouait avec Naïa, la fille des voisins. Et puis les attentats ont commencé, et bientôt la ville s'est trouvée prise dans un étau entre la terreur que font régner les « Combattants de l'ombre » , le couvre-feu, les contrôles permanents.
Elmir n'a plus le droit d'aller seul au collège. Son père, qui est journaliste à La liberté, est menacé. La bibliothèque où travaillait sa mère a été incendiée. Une nuit, Elmir sort en cachette, prend son vélo et se rend à la bibliothèque. Quelques heures plus tôt, dans la cour noircie, il a repéré un livre qui avait échappé aux flammes: Les aventures du capitaine Hatteras de Jules Verne. Il veut le récupérer pour l'offrir à sa mère, qui est à l'hôpital et qui n'a pas ouvert la bouche depuis l'incendie.
Elmir se cache à l'approche d'un voiture. Il voit trois hommes sortir de l'obscurité et faire feu. Il vient d'assister sans le savoir à l'assassinat du rédacteur en chef de La liberté. Et il a reconnu l'un des meurtriers, c'est le frère aîné d'Ismène. Mais le cauchemar est loin d'être terminé. Quelques jours après que son père a accepté de reprendre le poste de rédacteur en chef, Elmir est séquestré toute une nuit par des hommes cagoulés qui veulent obtenir la publication d'une lettre.
Dès lors, la vie ressemble définitivement à un enfer. Il faut déménager sans cesse, en abandonnant tout sur place. Il ne faut donner son adresse et son numéro de téléphone à personne. Elmir continue d'aller au collège, mais sous bonne garde. Naïa, dont le père a lui aussi reçu des menaces, va partir pour la France. Elmir se sent seul, il étouffe, pris dans une tempête qui semble ne jamais devoir finir.
Pourtant, un jour, le répit viendra pour son père et pour lui grâce à Nourrédia, la marchande de beignets, qui leur trouvera un refuge.
